Cutting the Hull
With the submarine fully Fibreglassed it is time to cut the penetrations in order to provide access to fit the PC components as well as for the intake and exhaust fans. I cut the tail off completely partly because it made sense to minimise the exhaust restriction but mostly due to me losing patience with fins and rudder modelling. It help give a more manageable length and made it more practical to handle and paint.
I chose to have a side access panel to fit and provide future access to all the components, with the panel being hinged along the top. I marked out the size needed for the side panel, dictated by the size of the motherboard. I was going to use hinges to begin with so marked out further notches to house them. When measured twice and marked out I cut out the panel using a Dremel. I didn’t attach the panel back to the submarine until final paint.
For the intake I opted to hinge the nose of the submarine at the top so when the PC was being used I could flip up the nose exposing the intake fan. I marked around the circumference and cut through using a jigsaw to give a straighter cut. I kept the nose off the main body until it was ready for final paint.
